Finally got round to sitting the EC- Council CEH exam yesterday after about a year of on off study (Along with 70-291, will do that exam soon…)

What a beast, toughest exam so far as the course material is huge  (Especially if your not with a hacker background  …. Scraped through with 75%, the pass mark is 70%. 125 questions with 4hrs exam time….

Found this a real step up on Security+ …….

    Thanks Chaps…..

    Zimbo – That’s it for the CEH ! :D
They have some other cool exams e.g. penetration testing –ooer :blink
    Licensed Penetration Tester (LPT)
    & Others
    Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI)
    EC-Council Certified Security Analyst (ECSA)
    Certified Network Defense Architect (CNDA)
    Network Security Administrator (NSA)
Going to get stuck in & slay the other beast next – 70-291 same as you!

Mattwest – You need the official self study guide (1000 pages) to pass the exam, I bought mine from amazon.com (Couldn’t get it via UK) – it was about £60.00 (Over £200 from EC-Council)
I also have a shelf full of Hacking related books ……. + Lots of hands on playing…..

    Zimbo & all

    Official Site http://www.eccouncil.org/CEH.htm

You need the official study guide to pass this exam, the book is good but a pain to read as the type setting is spaced poorly (Very strange).:blink
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0972936211/026-5890344-6874066?v=glance&n=266239

EC-Council seam to update the exam quite frequently (Which is good), but take out whole modules (Currently 22) http://www.eccouncil.org/EC-Council Education/ceh-course-outline.htm from the study guide, so the guide can get quite old quickly (Mine was slightly outdated e.g. Novell Hacking was removed).

The Art of Deception (Kevin Mitnick) is an excellent book on Social Engineeing
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/076454280X/026-5890344-6874066?v=glance&n=266239

On top of this it helps going to hacker / security websites for all the latest tools & get in the mindset…… go Google & read read read…..

A couple of sites for you: Top 100 Tools - http://sectools.org/
Cool Google hacks site: http://johnny.ihackstuff.com/

A lot of info about the exam over at http://www.techexams.net/ecc_ceh.shtml :D

You really need a background in networking (Network+) & security (Security+), but if you have a hacking background no problems…..

The exam format itself is more similar to Comptia than M$, but a lot more Screen dump type questions.
Rather than ask you say what type of switch you would need to apply to Nmap to perform a certain scan, they show you a screen dump of a scan performed & ask you which switches have been applied to get the result….:dry

I have long been interested in hacking from a purely an interest point of view, but to see some of the tools in action is awesome…….and scary :ohmy

Forgot to mention some entry requirements for the ceh :ohmy

    Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for appearing in the CEH certification examination, you must:
    • Have attended training for the CEH course at any of the accredited training centers. Should you choose to defer taking the examination after your training, and would like to opt for another location; you can apply for the same at a later date at any ATC of your choice by submitting your certificate of attendance to EC-Council.
    • If you have opted for self-study and not attended training, you must have at least two years of information security related experience.

Please download and complete the CEH Exam (EC0-350) Application Form
[IMG] and fax it to EC-Council at +1-212-202-3500 for verification. Upon approval, EC-Council will send you an eligibility voucher number which you can use to register and schedule the test at any Authorized Prometric Testing Center globally. Please note that Prometric Registration will not entertain any requests without this voucher number.
