I have just visited Tech-unity and was somewhat shocked to find the state it's in!:ohmy

For some of the members here, you probably won't of heard of Tech-unity, but it's very similiar to Certforums except based in the USA. Some of the members and staff you will reconsie from here and in the past Tech-Unity supported certforums and certforums has supported tech-unity.
    8)

It seems such a shame that Tech-unity has become a ghost town:blink

I have created a thread over there called:- Can Tech-Unity be Saved? For some of you like Harry and SGUK can post on the thread, but i noticed that new members can't register (which is a shame!) Therefore I have posted the same questions on that thread here:-

    Q) Can Tech-Unity be saved?

    Q) Is it too late?

    Q) Should TU be shut down?

    Q) Would you like to be a staff member at TU?

What 's your opinion on this?8)

I'm quite aware of the current condition of TU, but I don't think there's much you or anybody can do about it. The site owner Tom is a small business owner and doesn't have the "bandwidth" currently to properly attend to TU.

BTW, I *am* a Senior Mod at TU, so I can see "under the hood", at least to a certain degree. Mitzs is an admin, so she has even more of the inside track. At this point, without Tom's input, we really don't have the authority to make any sort of changes over there. The "newsbots" are the only regular posters and Tom, to avoid having TU spammed into submission, turned off the forum's ability to register new members.

Yes, it's a sad state of affairs, but it's not up to us to be asking such questions as "should TU be shut down"?

So why doesn't Tom sell part of TU to another person or member, such as yourself or Mitzs?:blink

Are you sure Mitz is still admin? I thought there was a thread announcing she had resigned from being a staff member there? :blink

How much "bandwidth" do you need to run a site and isn't this done by the web host?:blink

"but it's not up to us to be asking such questions as "should TU be shut down - I only asked that question to kick start a debate:biggrin

I think by 'bandwidth' trip meant time. Tom has stated several times that he just doesn't have the time to spare, and forums take a *lot* of time to run properly.

yes I know! and thanks for replying to the thread on TU:thumbleft

There have been a lot of IT and computer forums that have gone the same way as xeebra and Tech-exams.net:( I guess I should be thankful that TU is still online!8)

I've never had monkey on a stick before but I am willing to try just about anything once. :dry

And yes I am still an admin there. I had things going on in my life at the time that I had to go somewhere and play user without any more pressures in my life. I would never completely leave TU with no admin to stand guard over it. I still check in there. And as trip said tom doesn't have the time, which if you been looking around over there you have seen his post and you know what is going on. TU will not be closed down it is Tom baby and does hold a soft spot in some of our hearts here.

I can only imagine that, Mitzs and others (including me) have some idea of what we'd do if we had greater control of the situation, but the fact is, we don't. Since that's the case, it would be inappropriate to "tell tales out of school", so to speak, and to discuss what we'd do if we had "our druthers".

The site is Tom's so the call is his as to what to do next...including doing nothing.

Keeping a forum running can take a great amount of time and effort and to keep spammers off the site is another thing, if it wasn’t for the staff here CF would struggle to keep its head above water. Its a real shame that TU is hitting the rocks but without the time investment it will happen, it could easily happen here. But at the end of the day Tom needs to make a living and in his life that takes the number one spot over the website.

I know first hand how much a forum can take over your spare time, lets just hope Tom decides to make some plans for TU lifeline.

Tomshawk is a great guy and I hope to still see him around, irrespective of the fate of TU. I feel a little bad that I hadn't visited in a while but with the change in industry for me, so did the kind of forums I visit change to game dev.

I sincerely hope it stays up.

You make sound as though asking a question about what is happening Tech-unity is wrong?:blink

I am not disrespecting Tom, I know (from the threads on TU) that Toms has had a lot on his plate and if he could spare the time he would!! 8)

But, do find it odd the question has been raised through PM and not through public domain such as ceating a thread on it!:blink
Hence the reason why created the post in the first place!

I guess I'm just sensitive on the topic, Monkey. Sorry if I overreacted. A number of us have strong feelings about TU being "boarded up" for the time being.

Isn't that like Cancer and Heart attacks and doing your will? It's there and yet no one wants to talk about it! Yet how do you understand something without asking questions and talking about it!

Does anyone remember a member called Offside from TechExams.co.uk
:blink I think he was under a different username on CF and got Banned for poaching CF members!

How many people were annoyed when he stated he was pulling the pug?

What is wrong is you asking it on another site and doing a poll with, should it closed down.

The site is dormiant for now, not gone, not active, just resting. You doing something like this just brings up pain for those of us who slowly has watched it go to sleep due to freaking spammers. I can't fight a spam war by myself and I really can't handle researching child porn spammers anymore to turn it in and no govertment office seems to know who it should be reported to.:x It starts to controll your life. It isn't just a couple of hours a week, it is serval hours worth a day. I have spent 8- 10 hours a day researching new users and you do this every freaking day! So while TU light may be dim at the moment it is still protected and cared about. Now I'll say no more on this subject and I better never see another post from anyone ever again about TU being shut down or I will come unglued. Fair warning in advance....

Tom's a great guy. I really enjoyed Tech-Unity back in its heyday. If it were to resurrect itself, I'd be there.
