I looked at a PC a few nights ago that had gone bang, literally!
They are aware that the PC is scrap; they have had serveral years use out of it and are more worried about their data.
All data saved in *My docs*.
The PC was a branded one, so i know that XP is legit. I don't know if i should just slap the hard drive in the new machine and go through the Microsoft *you have changed major hardware.....* or plug the drive in to a different machine and get the beloved data first.....

    Get the data off first.

All too often XP will get itself in a muddle if you move it to a new motherboard.

Drop the HDD into an external USB HDD caddy and XP will be none the wiser, and the data (and resultant fee) will be all yours :)
