Has anyone built an android app before, as I am just looking for pointers on where to get started... is it a case of needing to learn quite a bit of Java first or can I just get started with Eclipse and learn bit by bit

If you go with the native Android SDK you will need fair bit Java.

You don't have to go native though.

Whatever you use you will need to be a developer.

Yes you can try and learn bit by bit, you might find it difficult starting in that manner, or it might work for you.

Typically people learn to write basic procedural code on a command line before they learn how to code a modern UI.

Lozler's written some Android apps, maybe ping him...

    Pluralsight got lot stuff...

Also consider Titanium, PhoneGap, Mono for Android.
