    Hi
Looking at a career switch and have been scouring the web for info on IT. Viewing these forums has been very helpful. Seems that A+ would be the place to start, using the Mike Meyers book and maybe supplement it with info from various websites. Any suggestions how many hours study A+ should take? I know it depends on how much you know to start with and how quick you are at learning but an average would be helpful. Also the compTIA website says "CompTIA A+ certification is an international industry credential that validates the knowledge of computer service technicians with the equivalent of 500 hours of hands-on experience". The implication is that you get yourself 500 hours of experience first. What does it mean (if anything?!)

Hi Nick, and welcome to CF.

Unless Im mistaken, then the implication you refer to about "500 hours" is generally that when you pass the A+ exams, then you will be at the equivalent level of someone with that much experience. That's assuming, however, that you have "got your hands dirty" in the process - good as Meyers' book is, nothing beats having an oldish PC to rip apart and rebuild to back up the content of the book.

Hope that helps (and makes sense) :)

Hi, Nick. Welcome aboard and good luck with the A+!
That used to be Six months experience... not sure if 500 hours is the equivalent? Basically, the difficulty level of the exam is pitched so that anyone with 500 hours of experience in that kind of job role could pass the A+ without too much difficulty. If you got that amount of experience first it would help in gaining your A+ but isn't a prerequisit - many people have done it with just home study and a couple of machines to play with!
