    Hello,

I have some questions relating to the 70-646: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator exam :)

A year ago I finished reading the Microsoft book. I watched the CBT Nugget 70-646 videos and I did the practice labs from the book. I also took some test exams to measure my skill. I found it difficult to achieve a decent score. The case study questions where my biggest problem. So much information!

Due to some personal things in life it's more then six months ago since I spend time studying the 70-646 exam. I want to pick it up again and move on with my certifications.

Is it still worth doing this exam in 2015? Do you have study tips on how to get all this information in my head? I would be very thankful :)

    PS: I already passed the 70-680, 70-640 and 70-642 exams :)

    Regards,
    Mark

    Mark,

2008R2 is still very much present in the work place, there are companies that won't upgrade to 2012 for a while yet (if ever) and I think having 2008 skills is a good idea.

As far as the exam is concerned have a look at the 70-646 page to make sure you have everything covered.

    Hiya Mark,

If you can get this done quickly I say why not. You'll get your 2008 MCSA. I'd imagine you work on servers based on what you've studied so I'd say go for it. A slightly older certification can have it's uses I think, for instance I have my 2003 MCSE, which is pretty old hat now, but people recall how difficult it was to get (if done properly) and can appreciate how hard I will have worked to get the certification.

Make it snappy though, I'm not sure how long this exam will be alive for. With regard to 2008, as said, it makes for a pretty decent server OS so will be found on many customers for many years to come.

    Cheers
    Jim

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks for answering my questions.

Quickly doing this exam might be a 'problem'. I noticed after a few hours of studying the book it has been a while since is I was doing this.

Do you have any idea or can you guess how long this exam will be available before it retires? If it retires in a few months, maybe I should skip this exam and focus on the 2012 books...

    Thanks!

    Gr,Mark.

I'm in the same boat as you at the moment, I have already passed 70-640 and 70-642 and want to get the 70-646 done to complete the MCSA 2008. There is something about me that cannot just move on without completing the full set. I also believe that having certifications in two or three generations, along with the relevant real world experience, shows that you have been around the block so to speak.

As @SimonD said, there is no mention of the 70-646 exam being retired any time soon. Server 2008 is still widely used from my experience, including here at my place.

I'm on the same path as you too, having unfortunately just failed my 646 last week (second shot already booked!)

When I started studying (for the first time since school) I figured that going for the three 2008 Certs (640/642/646) and then upgrading with the 417 would give the best "bang for buck" as id be certified in 2 technologies. Plus as others have said, companies will be using 2008 and R2 for a good few years to come. I know mine will anyway!
