Ryan is an administrator for a Windows Server 2003 network running Active Directory. Like many companies these days, his has undergone significant downsizing and has sold one of it's branch offices. Ryan has deleted all of the objects that comprised of that office (users, computers, etc) and anticipates recovering some space in the AD database. To his surprise, after deleting the objects, the database size the same. What does Ryan need to do to recover the empty space?

    A. Ryan needs to do an online defragmentation to recover the empty space.

    B. Ryan needs to do an offline defragmentation to recover the empty space.

    C. Ryan needs to use the Repadmin command line tool to recover the empty space.

    D. Ryan needs to use the Replmon graphical user interface tool to recover the empty space.

    E. Ryan will be unable to recover the empty space. Once an object has been created in the Active Directory database, even if it is deleted, the space is permanently reserved and cannot be reused.

    Answer later.

You might want to "hang back" until just before 8 p.m. Monday forum time to give everyone else a chance at it. Thanks.

Time's up. The correct answer is B. Ryan will need to do an offline defragmentation to recover the "lost" space. Defragmentation can occur when active directory is on line but it will not recover the space formerly occupied by AD objects. It will order the data so it is more contiguous so in that manner, it will make AD searches more efficient. The overall database size however, will not be reduced.

    More tomorrow.

No worries, Gav. In attempting to learn this subject in just a few weeks time, I'm experiencing plenty of indignity of my own.

I think that's Ryan's way of agreeing that I'm experiencing plenty of indignity.
