Just a quick question to all of you that are already on the ladder. What was your first position? Did you all start off in 1st line/helpdesk roles? or did you take another route?

    Many thanks in advance,

Technical Support - HP Brio/Vectra range. This was in 1999-2002 and I still look back on it with good memories.

I started as support to the system admin at our place, and within 6 months I was asked to jump in the deep end when he left the post.

That was 4 years ago and i've never looked back!

My first IT job was on an ISP help desk supporting DSL customers. I spent some time supporting home users, then did business DSL customer support, and level 2 call backs. Unfortunately a few years later I got off the ladder and now I'm trying to get back on!

My first real IT job was a Software IT Technician's post, this comprised basically of being of a rota of field Service, Workshop and servicedesk/helpdesk. Dealing with everything from unjamming printers to creating and deploying new builds & creating new sites (eg cybercafes, computer suites, etc...).

Not counting a job where I was the unofficial "go-to" computer guy, I started out as a Field Service Tech (13 years ago - wow, time flies!). I went to customer sites (mostly businesses, but some residential) to fix problems with printers, computers and, on rare occasions, servers.

Building and setting up systems for people in my spare time, doing the odd bit of help in the IT dept testing network cables and making sure stuff worked.

Still doing that but doing a lot more networking and technician stuff.

Cheers for the insight people. Sounds like I am on the right path, just might take longer to land my first position than I'd hoped.

my first position was something like IT Technician and it was in 2002 in Poland and I was getting something about 100-150 quid a month but I was still pleased as it was hard to find a normal job these days.
I had only ECDL :D but I went for the interview dressed in suit, when my competitors (a girl who was working as a shop assistant and a guy that was working in computer shop and was an idiot for me) came dressed in casual clothes. the company (factory) had about 70 ppl then and the main IT guy needed a hand with smaller tasks (these days lots of ppl couldn't even do table in word, so I had to do it for them :D) like word, excel, coreldraw, invoicing, warehouse and HR software.
after 2 years I was promoted to export dept (I was doing all from A to Z together with supervising of up to 50 ppl on 3 shifts) after 3 years I had enough of the stupid company so I came to UK and I am looking for a job where I will have clean hands again :)

My first position was in a computer shop doing builds and repairs. Didn't last long as it was supposed to be an apprenticeship and the pay wasn't great so moved on and was a "Field Systems Engineer" servicing small companies in the area installing computers, printers, servers, networks and supporting them.

Start where you're comfortable - if you've got the drive and aptitude your move up quickly!

13 years ago as a desktop support guy on a construction site, certainly helped with getting a good attitude, some basic skills, and learning how to deal with people (a wide mix, as you can probably imagine!
