I setup a WSUS server its syncronized and everything so im all good there. I have also created and linked the GPO policy to point to my WSUS server and also adjusted the Updates Detection Frequency to one hour (so i can see some results). I logged onto the Win 2k client and I can see that the GPO has been enforced because the user now has no options to edit (all been greyed out by the GPO).

I open the WSUS console and i still dont see that client (its my only client! :D ) so am i doing something wrong or will it appear after a few min or at a time a specified and didnt realise it?

    Win 2k is running SP4

It can be a pain to get the clients recognised by the WSUS server, the following is a copy from the step by step install instructions. Have you done the following?

i also read somewhere that Windows 2000 does have the right version of Automatic updates and i need to install http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/susclient/default.asp but ill give that a try.... i just discovered a big hole in my knowledge - SUS Server i could configure it on the server side and do GPO making sure the clients got their updates - but did they ever get their updates in my lab i did? :blink

That why i got to do this properly now... :(

That update is only needed if the W2K client is running SP1 or earlier - you said already that your client is running SP4, so it shouldn't be needed.

Have you configured the GPO to apply to the computer account and made sure that it has read and apply group policy in it's ACE (Access Control Entry)?

Just a note that that command is for XP and above. With W2K Clients it was something like:

    SECEDIT /REFRESH POLICY NOW

    (Can't recall the exact command)

To see if your GPO is actually taking effect on the PC go to:-

    gpedit.msc

    computer config\admin templates\windows components\windows update

'Specify intranet microsoft update service location'

Check it's enabled and the path to your WSUS is there. If not you know the PC hasn't taken the GPO. If it is it could be a problem with the update deployment or update retrieval from MS.

    Happy Xmas

    C_Eagle,

I thought gpedit.msc brought up the local computer policy? If so, it won't show anything implemented by the domain.

    Do you mean gpresult?

    Merry Christmas

    2. My primarydc (the wsus server as well) now appears for the first time in the Unassigned computers! STILL no sign of the Win 2000 machine. here is the screenie from the GPO:

the thing thats now confusing is how did the WSUS server get added when its not included in the GPO??

PS Anyone interested in maybe putting a WSUS Tutorial together for us noobs? Sparky? 8)

    So please disregard.....................

I'm doing 70-290 now so will have a look.

I've got a test Win2K PC so I'll have a look later to try and find anything useful.

SUCCESS!! On the Win XP Machine that is! I been up since 3am with bluerine trying to figure out where the heck im going wrong - im glad to report its WINDOWS 2000 that has the problem! I just installed Win XP - added to domain and to the security group the GPO is linked to and straight away its been added to the WSUS Server!

But can someone please explain to me why Windows 2000 wont appear?

Thanks pete and everyone else who has tried to help! :biggrin

NP mate! Now I don't know why W2K refuses to appear because I am no longer running that fine OS. However, if XP is working, then you are almost there. I would suggest you start to trawl through the KB articles and technet as there will be loads of stuff there relating to this kind of issue.

You could try making sure the machine account is in the OU with the WSUS GPO. And remember that by default it is only *authenticated users* in the *applies to* list - You want the WSUS GPO to be applied even if a user has not logged in, so add the machine account there as well if you can. That might do the trick.

Double success! Win 2000 there too now! How i did it was that i created two security groups and the members were the servers and the clients then i added those security groups to the Security Filtering... On the Win 2000 machine i clicked the Update Windows - before i removed the gateway so there was no internet and it seemed to connect to WSUS and all is now well!

    Thanks again!
