Up until recently I have been using physical machines at home for my "MCSE prep domain" - i am going to run exchange (early summer).

I have always been happy using Virtual PC, but after a chat with Ryan on the last meet, realise that VMWare really is the "dogs".

I have just installed it on my laptop, and currently in the middle of installing the first Virtual machine - Win Server 2003.

What a difference. The layout, functionality, speed, ease of use - league apart in my book!

    Nice one Boyce. :biggrin

It’s always worth remembering that you will have to deal with ‘real’ servers at some point though. Replacing RAID controllers and HDs etc etc needs to be done if you are looking after servers on a day to day basis. The last server I worked on was in a rack that was so high that I had to climb a ladder to get to it! :biggrin

Blimey, that must have been some rack!

Yeah, point taken, but the VMWare setup is in addition to the physical machines at the flat.

I had that trouble with my last permanent job, I had to use a small step ladder to reach the patch panels :D

Well you are likely to run into that problem in a 42 or 48u rack,
make sure you follow appropraite health and safety guidelines though, and never try to remove a server from a rack on your own!

Glad to hear your having good experiances boyce
i must point out that Workstation 6 is still in beta and thus has the DEBUG options enabled and hence decreased performance from the final version
also make sure you install the VMware Tools in all your vms for optimized drivers!

Ryan - Running 5.5.3 with the VMWare tools. It is sooooo much better than VPC (in my opinion).

Mick - I agree. A league apart. Are you running a domain on yours?

I never lost track of the light Ryan, i haven't even bothered looking at Virtual PC because VMWare already did and does a superb job when i need it.

I used Virtual PC 2004 for the first time recently when on an MS course, so we kind of had to. It's not terrible or anything, but it did make me realise how much better VMWare Workstation was.
