    Hi,

I have a dyslexic user that wants the default background colour of word 2003 documents to be
blue, and have white text. This is not to be saved to documents, it is merely so she can easily read documents. No matter what I do, it either saves the colours to the
document (which I don't want), or doesn't keep the settings when word is restarted and it goes
back to the default white background.

I have tried with themes and the general format menu > background colour.

I know this isn't an exam type question or anything, but I am at the end of my tether with this.

I read that creating a global template with the desired theme & saving it in the word startup folder, would load the template each time word is started.

It loads the template but doesn't load the theme and the word background is the default white with black text.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    thanks

There is a template file called normal.dot which you have to save the changes to. Off the top of my head i don't know the exact location but you'll find it from a quick google.

    Normal.dot is usually in c:\program files\Microsoft office\office 11\startup

also in Word in tools, options and (I think) the general tab is an option to prompt to save normal template which you will get when exiting so you know your changes are writing back.

Shouldn't be any need to mess with any of that :D

Look in Tools -> Options -> General.

Second option down is Blue background, white text

    thanks for the tips.

its annoying but the Tools -> Options -> General > Second option down > Blue background | white text, is "too blue" for the user, which is a pain and is why I can't use that easy option unfortunately.

If I select the "blue calm" theme which is perfect for her eyes, and save a new normal.dot (and overwrite the old one when word is closed), it saves that theme to any further word documents that are created and is not desired.

I dont wan't any of the word documents data to be changed by the theme, I just want the theme to present when word is "running", if you see what I mean.

this is the most annoying thing ever.

for the interest of anyone else encountering this.

it seems that setting the "window colour" within the XP/Vista profile, also changes the background of word documents to the same colour.

right click desktop.......into properties.......into appearance..........into advanced............then click on window.......change colour manually and that changes msword background.

I had spent all this time focusing on the settings in word itself!
