Hello to all the Certforums community,

I'm planning on getting a MCSA: Windows Server certification.

I was wondering if it would be better to start studying for Windows Server 2012 r2 and then take one single exam to upgrade my skills to Windows Server 2016, or skip the WS 2012 certification path.

Accordingly to my experience, the upgrade path to Windows Serve 2016 on enterprise environments will be slow, and the Windows Server 2012 certification will add the knowledge for a more widespread os.

    Your valuable suggestions are welcomed.

I'd stick with the 2012 exams and use the upgrade path later. 2016 won't be adopted for a while. I'm still supporting 2003 and 2008 for some customers :)

I agree with BB88, putting aside asking what your experience is, I'm assuming you've been a server admin for a year plus, I would go for 2012 as it also makes it look like you've been in the industry longer. Pensioners like myself with 2003 MCSEs show we've been around for a while so you'd like to think we know our stuff, hopefully we do! Cheers, Jim

    Thank you for your answers,

I've worked several years administering Windows/Linux servers and network devices, but I've never started a certification program, even thought at the beginning of 2000 I've taken several Cisco courses.

I have all the material to start a Windows Server 2012 MCSA certification path (Sybex Study guide + 70-410/11/12 video courses) and I'll start soon to study for the Microsoft cert.
