    Regardless of previous exams, anyone passing 70-642 would receive "MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure, Configuring"

    70-648 is used to 'upgrade' an already held 'MCSA in Server 2003' to 2008 technologies;
    70-649 is used to 'upgrade' an already held 'MCSE in Server 2003' to 2008 technologies.

    HTH.

    I should add that, as far as I am aware, it is only the 'multiple' exam certfications such as MCDST, MCSA, MCSE & MCITP that offer single-exam upgrade paths. (I sat one last month that upgraded my MCDST to MCITP).
    No single MCP's have upgrade paths and these will not count towards any of the newer MCITP certifications.
