A retrospective of Windows packaging: Paper or plastic

    It's all about the packaging

I can remember as far back as Windows 3.11. Anything before that is alien to me.

Unfortunately remember all of them ha ha. Bored me at first but brought back memories when it started getting to NT ha ha. Amazing to think that Microsoft started off with a Command line OS and now its a global conglomerate raking in billions

Sun's always made their money from hardware not software.

Novell might be a better analogy, except like Sun they now make peanuts ! (Compared to MS.)

Suns now basically Oracle by the way.

Yeah I've heard of the book, was that the one with interesting bits about DirectX vs MFC infighting ?

Next your gonna tell me you read the Road Ahead where Billy said the internet was for losers, and then the Road Ahead 2 where he said he invented it ?

Java was probably a huge loss leader.

Java is free always has been.

Sun tried to sell some enterprise Java software in various poorly thought out strategies, in order to get market share and adoption they basically helped their compeitors in the Java space.

    http://www.nytimes.com/1997/07/14/business/worldbusiness/14iht-cyber.t_1.html

Sun basically tried MS like strategies in terms of developing an entire software stack or ecosystem, just they couldn't finance it all in the end.

Heres my favourite computer history book :-

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hackers-Computer-Revolution-Steven-Levy/dp/0141000511/ref=pd_sim_b_3

Theres countless books on gates and MS.

Someone gave me Billy's 1st book but I couldn't get into it. Another good book I had to read was Blow to Bits by Harvard Business press. Richness vs Reach was a good topic.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away . . . . I wanted to be a Java programmer.

Hey anyway Mr Marsh, how are you enjoying being a man of leisure!!!

I recognise all but 3 of them: Windows 1, Windows/286 and Windows 3.

I've used Windows from Win 3.1 running on DOS 5, those were the days :)

Remember the fun you'd have trying to free up enough of that 640k memory limitation to get certain games to work in DOS . . . . . ah joy . . . . . Loved Tie Fighter tho, and Doom!
