Hello all, I am wondering how I should set the width a website appears on screen. I am using Dreamweaver MX and have built a site with a fixed setting of 800 pixels wide.

My brother checked it out today on his PC and said it was too wide for his screen to display it properly. He has his screen settings at 800x600. So if I set the maximum width to be 800 pixels wide and his screen setting is 800 pixels wide, why does the site appear wider than his screen ?

I did say to him to change his settings anyway, but this doesnt help others with the same setting.

    Cheers

Here at CertForums we have a fixed width of 760 for the main content but there is also a 10px border around the whole site. If you have a page border on your site and have set a 800px fixed width then this may be the cause of the problem.

Personally and from past experience I would choose a fixed width for "most" sites but some designs can benefit from using an expanding width.

To get a site to display perfectly on a 800 x 600 resolution you need to work to the following dimension

    760 x 420

Also to acheive this you need to set all your margins to 0.

This is because you need to also take into consideration the browser which takes up space. At the top you have the toolbar, address bar etc that is why you use 420 instead of 600 as the browser takes up remaining space. At the side you have the scroll bar.

Work within these parameters and you will not go wrong.

Hope that makes sense otherwise shout again and I will try and help further.
