Okay so I will be sitting the 70-290 exam for the second time in the next week or so. I was just wondering where should i head after the 70-290. Ive read that I was supposed to take 70-270, 70-271, and 70-272 before the 290 in that order. Ive only taken the 70-270. The 271 and 272 exams will be expiring at the end of the month.

Ive decided that if I fail the 290 again, that i will be changing courses and going for something that builds up to the 290, and retake the 290 when I feel more comfortable.

My question is, if and WHEN i pass the 290, where should i go next. My overall goal is to achieve MCSE on 2003 and upgrade to 2008 with Windows 7. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well I took A+, N+, 270, 290 in that order; im not sure where you read that your suppose to do the 271 and 272 *after* the 270? In my opinion the 270 is a step above the 271 & 272 so it seems a strange order of exams.

My advice would be to crack the 290 because if you want to get the MCSA/MCSE then it only gets harder after the 290, with the 291. Your saying you would change courses if you fail the 290 again, but that would lead you away from the MCSA/MCSE track so its really not worth your time? I guess it depends on your current experience levels and knowledge levels of the windows 2003 platform to where you should be aiming.

    Hey,

I don't know where you were told that you are supposed to take the 270, 271, 272 before the 290, but that was wrong. It's ultimately your choice what exams you want to take in what order. The 271/272 exams are due to retire in two weeks (30 June) so I'd say that the train has left the station for you and the MCDST. Given that you have already passed the 270, and you have net+ and sec+ (which cover your elective) you only have the 291 left and then you will be a MCSA. The 291 is a beast (literally and figuratively) so you will need to make sure that you know the material inside and out. Focus on the 290 right now, make sure that you are putting in the time. If this is your second try at the exam then you should have an idea of what types of questions they will throw at you. Hopefully you kept your scoring sheet so you can make sure you are familiar with the areas you were weak in. Best of luck!

Thats what i was thinking. I have seen people before that have taken the path of A+, N+, 270, 290, and then onward and been just fine. I read somewhere (probably on a forum) that the 290 builds off the 271, and 272. I dont know if the guy didnt know what he was talking about or was a little confused. I only missed the 290 by 2 questions the first time and i feel I got a bad pull of questions so retaking it should be good for me. Ive been studying heavily on the sections that I didnt do too well on.

My original path was 270, 290, and then on to 291. What I meant by holding off on the 290 was in the event that taking the 271 and 272 would be helpful for me, I would go back and retake them. Seeing as how they dont really build to 290 and also expire in 2 weeks ill just be focusing on the 290 pretty heavily. Im feeling a lot more confident about the 290 after taking it once and studying what i missed.

If you only missed a pass by 2 or so questions and you've been studying hard, you'll nail it second time around!

Then you can join me in the scary and daunting world of 291. 8)

Best of luck for the resit!
