The hardest exam I've ever taken is easily Microsoft (70-291 ): 70-291 - Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure. It was the routing and network security type exam. I felt like I understood it but I found the exam ridiculously hard. I think I failed it twice I think, old thread of my crying here

    What is yours?

I googled it to check I had the right exam name and found the Measureup site that is charging just under a million dollars for access to the exam, so I guess they agree with me that it's never to be looked at again ha ha

This question is such a difficult one, because the exam difficulty will always be relative to your experience.

I failed 70-685 4 times, so I guess I have to say that. But when I finally did pass it (after a year long break from studying for it), it wasn't that bad.

I've had some darned-near-impossible Theoretical Physics exams, but that was mostly due to my lack of preparation.

Certification-wise, the CISSP and CEH exams were long and grueling. But I'd have to say that the most difficult was 70-240, the Windows 2000 upgrade exam, mostly due to the circumstances. It was free, but you got only ONE shot at it. Worse, you had to pass each of the four sections individually or you failed the whole thing. And failing meant that you'd have to start over with your MCSE certification by taking the individual Windows 2000 exams.

I took it the last month it was available - I'm a horrible procrastinator. When I finished the exam, the proctor congratulated me on my pass. She then told me that out of dozens of attempts, only one other person had passed at that testing center that month. I knew him: my coworker, BosonJosh. Those practice exam explanations were what helped us pass.

Has to be the 70-291 – the 70-270 and 70-290 were easy enough if you put the work in but the 70-291 was a different level.

I remember the MS Press book for the 70-291 being small as well – completely misleading :) :)

I got lucky with the 291, passed on first shot after 2 months of prep... but I would say for me, the hardest exam was VCAP5-DCD, needed to practice more and I just never really gave it as much time as I needed, I figured my VMware knowledge would be enough, but I was mistaking!
