According to the 70-270 Windows XP Pro Self-Paced Training Kit by Walter Glenn and Tony Northrup it states,

A domain controller is a computer running Windows 2000 Server that is configured as a domain controller so that it can manage all security-related aspects of user and domain interactions.

Why do they state Windows 2000 Server and not Server 2003?

It can be anything from 2000 - 2008 depending on what you have installed. They hold a copy of the active directory listings of all the objects in the domain and manage who and can do what on the dommain.

If that's the case, then you've got a later edition, and they simply neglected to update that single line of text. Dude, they're human... mistakes happen.

What matters is, that you understand what a Domain Controller is. The version that its on, whether is 2000, 2003 or 2008 does not make a difference.
