    Hi All,

just wondered what cert/s you're aiming for at the moment? I have to renew my VCP6 by the end of Feb 2018 to stay certified so I'll likely take the easy option and go for the VCP 6.5 DCV. One of these days I'll get organised enough to go for a VCAP but I'm too broad in my current role to focus on it. I might do a bit of a blog/diary on here of my VCP 6.5 exploits as I go.

I've recently passed the VMware Techncial Sales Professional accreditation which was very enjoyable, I'd highly recommend that and the VMware Sales Professional purely as a refresh on what's new and hot at VMware, plus they are free of course.

    Cheers
    Jim

Well was meant to be doing my A+ as requested by my boss but im putting it off for now. Been studying the Server fundamentals exam with hopes to sit it next month. Im not too fussed about certs I mainly study a topic when I gain a genuine interest in it and want to find out more, cant say I use them to boost my CV either. Anyway Im only at the start of my IT life not even hit the 2 yr mark (nearly there) so dont see the point in over certifying..

Experience is king certainly. I suppose it depends on what you're doing and where you want to go. I worked in IT for about eight years before getting my first cert. It saved my bacon. I had to go into another area of IT and I doubt I'd of pulled it off without my Microsoft certs

Very nice. Dave would you say its very much a different world when it comes to certification for developers or similar? There used to be a Sun Java cert that seemed well thought of but I wouldn't know what was about today

Certification isn't really such a big deal, there is too many skills and too much new tech for it to remain relevant.

Exams aren't really a reflection of the real world. Publishers struggle to make programming books with a 2 year shelf life.

There are certs around, Oracle bought Sun, so SCJP is now OCJP. Microsoft have MCSD. Then there is things like AWS Certified Developer.

Certifications for development is bit like taking your bronze swimming badge to the Olympics.

It also seems much of the certification industry is in effect a rather cynical money grab, and most developers don't see the need or value in it.

As you mentioned, it served a purpose for myself as I retrained from C++ to Java and later Java to C#, it gave me some evidence for my CV. Many C++ developers retrained from C++ to other languages and they would have successfully made the transition without certification.

I can appreciate what you're saying here Dave. I would imagine its all about the work you've done and your experience. How about someone just starting out, would that be all about their degree? I do think they have value in the infrastructure as its easy to set out a set list of things you should know with tin and OSs. Also a way to avoid getting filtered out of jobs early on or if you and someone else are very similar, they'll usually pick the certified person as a lot of places like to be able to say, we have X amount of certified staff in XYZ and infact they need it to gain Microsoft Partner Status (or similar) I'm fairly sure.

The most important thing for a junior developer is practice to build experience, both at work and at home.
Any job will require an interview, if you are a junior you will get grilled by a senior developer and you'd better know your stuff.

Generally certifications work in reverse for developer jobs, as many senior developers will assume you have been wasting your time taking exams, rather than writing code.

Its more analogous to say a guitarist or a surfer, they don't take exams to prove they are good, but another skilled practitioner can spot good from bad.

Originally after many technical interviews I bought into the sales propaganda of certification, the idea that you could test once and then skip testing in interviews was indeed appealing. However a Lead developer who is hiring absolutely must make sure they build a good team, its crucial to the project, and certifications simply aren't up to the job.

    First post here in years!!!

I have been eyeing up the CCIE for nearly 20 years, but i have gotten to the point that it makes no difference. I would love to study the CEH.

Great to see you back @cisco lab rat. I'd imagine you would breeze the CCIE and I can appreciate you may not strictly need it, but to get that coveted CCIE number.... mmmmm ha ha ha

Good to be back sir. My problem is that i get bored in exams. I too toy with the idea of going for it, it would only take me say 3 months to get all the rubbish bits into my head but once again laziness and stuff get in the way :-) Maybe one day

Ah, my life is in the classroom creating hardcore network engineers and promoting my conspiracy theories. I did the first year of the physics degree then i had to stop as it was distracting from the classroom. One day, maybe when i retire (Fat chance) i will get back to it

I hope it all goes well mate, we're here if you need to talk but possibly not openly as it's a HR matter yet to be resolved. Good work on sticking with the CCENT though mate, always wish I'd studied for that.

You work really hard Joe I'm not surprised something had to give. As long as you wear tin foil on your head to stop "them" form reading your thoughts, I can forgive this indiscretion

    @cisco lab rat

Joe, do CommSupport cover the CCNP as well?
I am self studying for the CCNA, but think I will need some professional support for the CCNP if I go that route.

    Cheers

Got too much on this year... Started my last module to complete my MSc, trying to do the Cisco CCNA trainer (part 1), as well as training for my 3rd Dan in Tang Soo Do and recently started Jujutsu (AikiJujutsu)... Yeah, took on too much... May have to give up a thing or two...
