What would be the next recommended step for developing Web Design Skills?

I have a good knowledge of HTML and can use software packages such as Flash and Dreamweaver to a reasonable level!

Any particular software package or programming languages that would be a good natural next step?

personally I would recommended PHP and MySQL with this so that you can move away from static pages through HTML and in to more dynamic pages where the website will manage itself.

I would say Javascript and/or CSS, and definitely HTML5, as Flash is a dying tech.

Code Academy has some great free tutorials to get you started on learning to code. What path you choose depends on where you want to be in the future.

    HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, JQuery, JSON, REST, Node.js, Knockout.js.

As you get more into server side development there is a lot of choice, can't go too far wrong with learning some SQL or Linux skills.

I'd probably go for Ruby over PHP, but there is lot choice here for server side languages and frameworks. You have DART, GO, Clojure, Scala, TypeScript, Java, .NET, list is endless.

Of course none of this really relates to Web Design, it relates to web development.

You can do a fair amount of Web Design work with just photoshop, notepad and pencil and paper.
