Ok, i have a laptop running vista home premium,

windows mail is setup and used as teh regular email client

when you click the contacts button it opens up the

c:\users\username\contact folder as is standard in vista and displays the contacts avalible

now, on a normal vista PC, by double clicking on each contact, the contact should open for editing of deatils.
this does not happen, a smaller window appears for a milisecond and then disappears, i dont get the chance to see whats displayed in this window.

Nothing is recorded in the event veiwer

the same problems still occurs in safe mode

currently scanning for viruses, but i doubt thats the cause.

cant find anythign on a google search

    I'm lost, HELP!!!!

Perhaps try a system restore? Sometimes it can fix weird problems like this :biggrin

Microsoft Office also has a application recovery. Maybe that one first before the system recover?

Did you happen to disable any services, or done any tweaks to the OS?

I just tried on my computer, I am running vista ultimate and it works fine.

nope :( the user wouldnt have a clue how to. Windows updates have been installed, but any problems with them should have reveresed with the sys restore.

    Looking for more suggestions?
P.S. i'm backing up all important files now, so extreme suggestions accepted!!!
my current aim is to use the recovery console to remove and replace the two key files WAB.exe and WAB32.dll I've replaced them in windows but had so many issues with permissions, even when logged in as 'administrator' and after taking ownership. I'm gonna try it in a more basic command line interface and see if hat gets round some of teh issues

ok, lets start with the easy questions since the other stuff is not working.

Are you sure that there are contacts in there?
And have you tried entering a new contact to see what happens?

Yes, the .contact files exsist and open for editing on other vista systems

if you attempt to add contact, add group or edit contact the same thing happens every time.

    other notes:
tried opening windows mail, and createing new message, clikced on the "To" button to get to teh contacts list and it errored "unable to choose recipients"

when you open the contacts folder(windows address book program (they are one and the same in vista) and can see all the .contact files listed, the preview pane has no problem reading the file to previw some of the deatils.

My current belief is that a file/program somewhere associated with windows address book(WAB) is corrupted. - though i'm not sure what files are associated with the contacts program

this is really confusing me, Cheers for any help you can give

sometimes these things just dont have a easy to fix cause.

I'm sure if i had started replacing all the operating system files one by one i would have sorted it eventually, but it was easier to formatt and start again
