ESXi is a Class 1 hypervisor
meaning it interacts directly with the hardware
as opposed to a Class 2 that talks through the HAL of an underlying (host) OS

VMware Server, VMware Workstaiton, Virtual PC, Virtual Server, these are all Class 2 hypervisors

VMware ESX (vSphere, ESXI) are Class 1 hypervisors
Hyper-V and XenServer are also Class 1 hypervisors but they work in a slightly different way

Oh get you fancy pants! I'm currently arguing with myself if a solid state drive for my laptop is a wise move or a waste of money . . . . ha ha

if you buy a decent one Win7 will boot in around 8 seconds ;)
course my windows 7 VDI on SAN storage boots in only 11

dont buy for capacity and run VMDKS on it, way pricey for that at the moment! :)

Ah go on you've sold me on it! Thanks mate, I'm due a present from myself I think. One thing I cannot bear is when I want to do 10 things at once but have to wait for the hard drive to catch up, arrrrrhhhhh

Thanks for the info Ryan - whilst its something I've never read into (another thing on my list of many I want to investigate!) - repped for a simple and clear cut explanation
