my broadband was fine until we moved to virgin media, and my friend has no problems when going through the same exchange (with different ISP), therefore i do blame virgin media

and no, i do not want a leased line but i should be able to get more than 1/16th my advertised speed i think!

Make sure you're not comparing a megaBIT per second speed with a megaBYTE per second speed. ISPs rate speeds in megabits per second (Mbps or Mb/s), while IE and Firefox report speeds in kiloBytes per second (KBps or KB/s) or megaBytes per second (MBps or MB/s). There are 8 bits in a byte, so a download speed of 8 Mbps would look to IE and Firefox as 1 Mbps.

Still, even if you're off by a factor of 8, you'd be at 1/2 your advertised speed. I'd recommend using a site like SpeedTest.net to test... SpeedTest.net uses Kbps values (in bits, so it should match up with ISP rated speeds).

Quite respectable - particularly when a 2 Mbps subscription means UP TO 2 Mbps, not guaranteed 2 Mbps. If someone wants guaranteed service, many providers offer that... at a price.

Yep maybe my complaints and comments on AOLs (yes I hear everyones taunts and giggles)service have been noticed as the other week I was getting faster than 2 meg, if I remember correctly I was getting 2218Kbps. I am still looking for a better provider but since I live in the sticks there aren't many to choose from.

    I wish I had that :(

Pointless with such a crappy upload. Residential products will never be allowed a decent upload.

Nice speed - I wish VM was available in my area.
I would have thought that the upload speed would have been higher than 731kbps on the 50 Mb package though, as I get almost 2Mbps upload with Be's 24 Meg ADSL.

I think that's a bit misleading. The copper line is already there so why would BT need to lay new cabling?

In reality it comes down to how much bandwidth Virgin have purchased from BT Wholesale's backbone and also what virgin throttle on their network. The ISPs that have good ADSL performance are the ones who have their own DSLAMs and fibre backbone at the exchanges. The cheap-arses just resale BT Wholesale products i.e. IP Stream ****e!

So the lesson of the day is: you get what you pay for! No need to get leased lines - cos they can be just as ****e - just identify what/which ISP has their own gear in the BT Exchange...that's what what local loop unbundling was about guys!

Jesus Henry Christ that is expensive.

We've got a 32Mb MPLS circuit into our Glasgow office - with an additional premium because there's no local POP for the carrier - and we pay less than that per month for it.

Anyhoo - this is the results on the line I have into my basement (I'm currently running it as our DR site so its cheating somewhat :biggrin)

Or complain to Virgin... tell them your problems... and that if you don't see any improvement in a couple weeks, you'll have no other choice but to change providers.

Sweet! I wish I could pull that trick but all of ours goes inter office :dry

Last I remember the figure is somewhere round there and of course there is the premium to pay for being in London.
