I realize there's no direct path, so I was planning on backing up my home directory from 6.06, blowing the installation away, doing a fresh install of 8.04, then restoring my home directory. Maybe I'm being naive. Is there anything else I need to be considering (and it would be nice if somehow, I could save and restore my Firefox bookmarks)?

Nevermind. I asked on the Ubuntu forums, and it turns out you can use the Update Manager to directly upgrade to 8.04.1 from Dapper Drake. I thought this was generally unsupported, but I was wrong. I've got 93 packages to update before I begin the upgrade process. Will probably just do the updates tonight and then upgrade tomorrow night. I'll let you know how it goes.

It's done. My main desktop at home is now Ubuntu 8.04. It took forever for all of the upgrade packages to download and install. Now I'll see how things go as I start going through my regular routine.

The upgrade is humming right along. The one pain in the arse it didn't cure is that Totem still opens by default when I put in a DVD to watch a movie. I have to kill Totem and launch xine (which I prefer) manually. I queried the Ubuntu forums, but no one has a solution (which I find odd).

On the other hand, my daughter's Mac keeps dropping the wireless connection (which never happened on laptops running either Windows XP or Ubuntu) and (I just couldn't believe it), her Mac uses CUPS for printing. Ubuntu is infinitely easier to connect up to my Windows computer (connected to my printer) for printing.

I really feel like going Linux and Open Source is a better and better decision all the time.

Yeah, I have K running on a Dell Latitude D510 with Broadcom integrated wireless. Apparently I have to upgrade the firmware of the wireless card in order to use it in K. I just haven't figured it out yet.
