unwanted speaker echo

just built a pc, the motherboard has 5.1 surround, but i am currently just using stereo speakers in the green socket. there seems to be an amount of echo/reverb no matter which speakers i plug in, i have no idea why!

Check in your Control Panel, under Sounds and Audio that the sound card hasn't installed with some bizarre sounds system (eg, Hall reverb, etc). Sounds the most likely thing in the first instance.

Also, do you happen to have a microphone installed as well ? If so, it is possible that it is that that is picking up any output from the speakers and feeding it back through themselves.
