    Hi everyone

Don't know if this will be of use to anyone, but it certainly was to me.

At the weekend I was sorting out a mates laptop which had slowed to a crawl. Looking through it, I found tons of unneccessary software running from startup causing the slowdown. A lot of the stuff I didn't recognise though, but looking around I found this site....

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

....which gives a staggering amount of info regarding the normally unheard of startup programmes, threads and processes you see running, including which are necessary, which are optional and which are virus related (there is something around the lines of 13,200 entries!!!)

There is also this link on the site....

    http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php#THE_PROGRAMS

...which not only gives a step-by-step guide to identifying and disabling unwanted backgreound programmes, but also allows you to download the programme list in its entirety.

Anyway, hope it is useful as a reference guide if anything.

    Cheers
