Actually GBL you sound well grounded in regard to what you can and can’t do in IT. From what you have said you have had some exposure to the IT infrastructure at your work which can only help in your search for a full time job but at the same time you seem to appreciate that you won’t know what you are fully capable of doing until you *are* the IT guy standing in front of a DC that just wont boot. As BM has said I’m sure you will get there.

Going back to the OP this is why I always question people with no IT experience announcing that they are “good with computers” when in actual fact they are just really IT enthusiasts, there is a big difference.

BM sums things up nicely by saying....

I realised this myself when a server room flooded before Xmas and I had to restore the whole domain on new hardware. No sleep for days and tapes that took hours to catalogue, it wasn’t fun. It’s ok though, I’m “good with computers” :biggrin :biggrin

You haven't truly "arrived" in IT until you've fallen asleep in a server room waiting on something to reboot, rebuild, or install. :blink :sleeping

Thanks for the props; you are too kind. :)

some good advice here. a friend of mine in IT is going to tutor me so I don't get totally baffled by terminology all though I know a little from the CIW course although I bet the context makes the info a lot more detailed. But anyway I've languished in a boring office environment for years doing a job which was pretty boring and I like to learn new stuff so am willing to work hard to get somewhere, the time to get trained is now otherwise I'll be stuck doing the same old crap for the rest of working life..

That's what happened to me. In a school or home environment I pretty much can fix anything that's fixable, however in a professional corporate environment, I can't do what I want. There are guide lines to follow, rules to learn, not just IT but how things function. It's the first thing that I learned when I started working. It's easy to format a pc and start fresh, but it's hard to troubleshoot and fix a pc without formatting (this is just an example). Even to this day I still make mistakes and sometimes I even miss things that are right in front of me, but I do my best to learn from my mistakes and not let that discourage me. All I can say is that experience can never be replaced.
