    Good afternoon

My mum christened me Simon but to the rest of the world i'm known as Crow (don't ask... it's a long and but not very interesting story!!).

At the moment i'd class myself as an enthusiatic amateur, though i do have 4 years experience of day to day maintainance of a small office network (the company never saw fit to employ a full-time IT manager!!). All the stuff that i can't handle comes from an external network support contract.

I found this site whilst trying to get a bit of unbiased info on various companies offering online training. From reading some of the threads it would seem that so far i've had similar experiences to those of many members - pushy salesmen who don't seem to know jack, but will say pretty much anything to close the deal. Unfortunately, all this means is that whilst i now have quite a long list of companies that i WON'T go with, my search for something suitable is still ongoing.

    Cheers for now

    Crow

Wow, what a welcome. What a friendly bunch you are :D

Thought the best way to start is the A+ followed by Network+. If all goes according to plan, those 2 will be done whilst staying in my current job... after that it's whatever i can find in the IT field whilst taking the MCSE. Doesn't it all sound so simple in theory!?!?!?!?!

From reading some of the boards it seems that LearnKey is quite popular (and within my price range!!). However, as i said earlier, ALL courses are the Mutt's Nuts up to the point when the salemen get involved!! Anyone got any info i should know before i take it any further?

    Cheers

I am not a salesman, so no pinch of salt needed before you read this. The MCSE is a hard slog even for seasoned IT professionals. What the salesman don't tell you is that it could take you years to complete, it took me three! A lot of people drop out when the going gets tough. Make sure you have done your research before parting with money for a training provider. Even with a training provider, you will have to spend enormous amounts of time self studying, for they don't cover the topics in enough detail to pass the exams.

Why not just go for an MCP exam after N+? It will count towards MCSA or MCSE anyway and it will give you some insight into the preparation required and the exam format.

It is all possible to do by self study alone.

    Good luck,

    Pete
