I'm sad that I only got into studying for MS exams as they announced its retirement! For me personally MSDN is too expensive so I'm currently cycling 180 day trials for my labs!

The hope of them reversing the decision never gained much momentum, then?

When are they pulling the plug on TechNet? I heard a while back it was going to happen but was expecting something new to be announced as a replacement, or, for them to reverse the decision.

Depends when you took out the original subscription - I'm on my extension just now so not too long to go.

The more key thing is to download and write down all the product keys.

Funnily enough, I had a wedge of CDs last week. I have another year or so to run though.

I downloaded and saved all my TechNet product keys shortly after they announced they were killing it. As well as downloading anything and everything I'd need software wise, I'm all set until the stop the keys from working!

Just bear in mind you probably won't be able to activate said Technet keys as they'll expire them, so you'll need the VMs installed and activated before your end date.

Actually it gets worse... over at techexams, one guy had his keys revoked so the VM's that were activated were deactivated and required new keys.

Hmm - so MS are checking the keys that have already been activated?

Yeah looks like it invalidates the existing technet keys... Kind of s***** of them to do that...

I am trying to find the thread, but can't seem to pin point... But basically the guy was saying once his keys were invalidated, his VM's would reboot every hour until he installed a valid key.

Oh that really sucks, means my 2008 setup is going to fall over next time I boot it then. Crap.

@theprof Yes thought I saw that on "the other certification forum" luckily I've still got about 9 months left but I really don't know what I'll do about it after that it does kinda force your hand to go down unethical routes though should be able to get round it for a while with a rearm but it'll be kind of annoying to having to keep resetting up parts of my lab when the eval keys expire etc.

I'm guessing that stopping web access might stop this. Strange one - only seen this before with SBS 2003 when there is not enough CALs installed.

I actually let my TechNet subscription expire shortly after the announcement (it was coming up for renewal and I couldn't see a point). My keys are all still functioning on internet connected machines at the moment.
