I've booked up to do my N+ on the 24th May. Can anybody explain how this weird scoring system works? I have read that around 60 out of 85 will pass. but the score is out of 900.

I took a N+ course afew years back and I'm finally getting round to doing the exam. I have Meyers book and Exam Cram 2 test questions which I'll be running through on the computer.

Good too see lots of people posting that they've passed.

My manager says when I pass I can do my A+ :biggrin

Then I may look at doing the Microsoft Help Desk one, and from there on who knows.

Cheers for any info and advice

The score is from 100 to 900. So when you start the exam and then quit you still have 100 points. Nothing strange here.
You'll get 85 questions and 90 minutes to answer them. If you are in a non native English speaking country, you get 30 minutes extra. You need 554 points to pass.
The questions are mostly short and based on fact-knowledge.

I'll just add that the points are weighted between questions.

i.e. some questions score more points than others and this can vary over the life of the exam.

The weird thing is in some CompTIA exams some questions don't score any points.

    Is that serious?

I only mention as, in the N+, it assumes a certain level of knowledge of PC's. I'm not sure if you have that knowledge, but it may be worth you picking up an A+ book now and having a glance through.

I only mention as *lots* of people who do the CompTIA route tend to go A+ then N+ (of course, it depends on your circumstances).

I had my exam recently, and it included questions on IRQs and COM addies, so if you don't know about them, you may want to brush up.

Good luck with your exam - the books you've chosen are exactly what I used, and they were perfect!

I passed mine on 20/04/07. Managed to get 685, although I hadn't done any revision, because I have been busy with our new arrival (Little baby daughter) for the last couple of weeks.
Loads of questions on WINS, DNS and Private IP Addressing. Few questions on the size of different addresses, IPX, MAC,....
Fare amount of questions on authentication and security protocols.
Read all questions carefully, since some of them are abit tricky.
    Good luck

    First: congratulations.
Then: it is obvious why they do not tell you what questions you had wrong. It would be far easier to feed the braindumpsites if they gave away this info.

That's why they indicate the areas where you were weak. At least, they used to, by way of a bar graph or percentage score for each section.

They still do. You will get a sheet with text like:
You missed 1 or more questions in the following areas:
And then there is a list of subjects.
