    What is the first valid host on the subnetwork that the node 192.168.145.246/28 belongs to?

    I know how to find the subnet mask, increment, and network ranges. My question is: Is there a quick way to find what network range 192.168.145.246 belongs to?

    I think with that particular one - if your increments 16 - work backwards with that one as its 246 - so .241 - .254

    Hi Blang,

    I recommend the following site:

    http://www.subnetting-secrets.com/index.html

    I have read/watched many guides on subnetting, all of which were really difficult to understand. The method explained by this site is fantastic. To buy the entire guide + videos is approx £17.

    Write it out in binary=easy
    do it often enough=p*ss easy

    EDIT: You also need to know your subnet mask. You can't work it out from an IP address because it could be classless rather than classful. You could assume but...

    There are probably a million and one ways to do this and everybody has their own. You have to find your own way :biggrin

    The way I do it is use /24 as a reference point
    /24 -> 1 network x 256 hosts
    /25 -> 2 x 128
    /26 -> 4 x 64
    /27 -> 8 x 32
    /28 -> 16 x 16

    work backworks from 256-16=240 which is the network address
    so .241 is the first host.
