My sister as usual has gone against my advice and bought a laptop with Vista on it.

She is having a problem installing her USB modem ( I have read vista doesn't work well with them) Its a speed touch not sure of model number.

Her ISP is Virgin apparently there have been problems with virgin and vista.

Does anyone know where the My Network places applet is and what is called?

thats what i would have done but unfortunatley my sister thinks she knows it all, and because one of her friends told her vista was good then it must be and whatever I say wont matter.

I just cant wait untill she gets a virus because she wont get adequate protection as I have suggested then I will laugh at her.

Thats the one, even though my sister has tried to get it to detect vista still isnt seeing the usb modem, and virgin tech support are sending her a disk with compatible software on it.

what about the modems manufacturers site? They're the mostly likely to have any up to date drivers/issues on their site?

BTW - what modem is it?

Ditch the USB modem and go with a SOHO modem / router and ethernet based connection, might as well make it a wifi router while your at it too. :biggrin

Virgin just wont have brought out USB drivers for the Modem for Vista yet. I agree, ditch the USB modem, and get a proper ethernet router.

And what makes you think Vista is crap? I've got vista, and I happen to think its not bad (admittedly I switched off UAC, but thats because I know what Im doing). I DO have AV for it (AVG Pro), and it works fine. Runs my programs, plays my games, does what its told (AND Im using the x64 version, which is touchier).

I'm surprised. I'm with Virgin and I have the modem that has both ethernet and USB (ok, granted I was with ntl so I actually have the old gray box). Anyway I too recommend getting a wireless router/switch and just use wireless.

The modem is a speed touch one, I have told my sister to get a dedicated modem but she won't listen to me.

She thinks as soon as she get the compatible disk from virgin everything will be hunky dory.

had a quick look and virgin (on their site) suggest getting the most recent drivers
    Linky
As these are from Speedtouches on site and haven't had any 3rd party fingers on them - have you tried those??

If so, I have no idea what virgin are sending????!?

GBL : I had the same problem when I bought a laptop with Vista on it!

I also have a speed touch USB modem. Although it comes with a software and drivers, these only support Windows XP. Don't blame your sisters, most laptops come with windows xp or vista pre installed. If it's anew laptop it's more likely it wil the new windows version on in it!

Anyway I will post you the link!

Once you install the driver for vista, the USB Speed touch modem work s like a treat!!:biggrin

Just searching through my Hard drive for the file.:biggrin
Right the files is about 10.5mb in size, so it's not something I can upload here, do you have access to the internet on a nother PC?

OK here's the website you need to choose which model you have got before downloading the driver!!:biggrin

    THOMPSON SPEED TOUCH USB MODEM

GBL here is the link that will take you to the list of models, just choose the model and download the vista driver. Make sure you uninstall the window xp driver first!!!:biggrin

    Select your product

Using Windows Add/Remove Programs un-install the previous driver.
    Install the Vista Update.
PLUG in your modem when prompted by the installer, and not before.
