As some of you know when I got my PC back in March it arrived with an Nvidia 8600gt graphics card in it and had various problems with the display driver due to malware only format and re-install sorted it.

After buying BIO-SHOCK last weekend everything has ran well up untill tonight.

I had to turn the graphics setting down to medium and knock v-sync off on the graphics setting. I also had to get the new nvidia beta driver to get the game to work.

I have now got to the third level and all of a sudden I am getting sudden freeze then reboot. I have turned the resolution down but it is still doing it just not as much as it was.

    Is my card knackered?

    Any ideas?

There was a patch for the Xbox version to address some stability issues with Bioshock. you might want to check the website for a PC patch.

I have the game set to auto download the latest patches, I also had a look for any new patches and there arn't.

Apperently the xbox version needed patching and it caused problems apparently users had to clear the cache everytime the wanted to play.

I would try checking the RAM connections, clean the tips with a rubber from the end of a pencil and maybe try it on the graphics card too..

Doubt this will help much but as I have no idea what's wrong I'm just throwing a guess in :p

Does the PC ever crash when you are not playing this game? If it doesn’t then it looks like an issue with the game and not the stability of the system.

Have you tried a repair install of the game? :blink

I would take them tommorow but I have a slight financial issue at the moment, I have had to take an 11% pay cut so am a bit skint next month, next month I had my car being service, then road tax the month after then it Christmas.

Hopefully if I get enough overtime I will be able to do both exams soon.

No it only crashes when I play the game.

When you mention a repair install of the game do you mean that uninstall the game then re-install?

There should be a "repair install" option when you inset the CD and select the "uninstall" option

Why would this solve anything, do you think I have missing files?

Perhaps, it only happens a particuar level so it is worth a shot. Make sure you do a repair install as you may lose your saved games if you uninstall and reinstall.

If that doesnt work then it may be an issue with the graphics card. Does the game bomb out at the same point each time?

No but it is very very close to each time, it depends on how fast I move the character.

Game crashed are very rarely to do with faultly hardware in my experience, I've played many games online and found people with this type of problem on alot of different machines. Out of wondering, what game is it your having problems with?

What options do you have to configure the graphics within the game? You could try switching all graphics effects off and see if that helps.

    Its BioShock.

When I had this problem ages ago with random reboots and bsods it ended up being a missing dll file for the display driver. Nv4.dll but I know that that this file is there now.

I havent used any reg cleaners since I re-installed XP so I havent took anything out and I havent had any viruiss'.

I will try the repair install but if that doesn't work then I may have to assume my card is fu****.

Ah yea sorry didn't read the first post properly. If the game runs ok over then one bit, i'd wouldnt suspect the graphics card so heavily. Im assuming you've checked for similar problems in Bioshock forums etc?

I've just found this which would suggest its the game, and not your hardware which may be a fault... worth a read at least.

I had to knock vsync off to get it to run and put it to medium res.

When I got to this level 3 I had to switch the res from 1024 x 768 to 800 x 768 and have tried it at medium res, I havent tied it a low res as I dont think it will solve it.

    GBL,

have you monitored the card for temps? I know some video cards tend to overheat alot causing the crashes. It would also potentially explain why the game crashes and not the OS.(this is just a possibility)

Changing the configs may get it to run, but jumping to the conclusion that its your graphic card when there seem to be widespread problems with the game crashing seems abit extreme. Im not trying to be funny, just wouldnt want to see you get a new card for the same problems to occur.
