Oh No! :ohmyPlease tell me you've not got Nortons installed on your PC:rolleyes:

I can't see how cleaning the heads will make a difference? After all if the drive reads a windows disk then that proves the heads are OK? What about the discs what condition are they in?

The disc seem to getting scratched because all they are doing is spinning inside and not running :blink and no havent got nortons.

The drive should play anything and were playing anything until sunday afternoon, these are just game discs so I take it they are under video. I just wonder if a reinstall of everything will sort it out.

Is the windows installation disc a DVD or CD?

SIODRV - the driver perfroms system functions on low level such as controlling video card or printer! but sometimes it can be camouflage as a virus and found in system32 folder named - siodrv.sys.

When was the last time you did a virus/spyware check on your system GBL?

First thing I'll do is a virus scan when I get home

I did a system restore but can't remember how far back I went, I may try that again too.

Edit: I have contacted the site where I got it from too see if they can help, I just hope that if I did a full wipe and reinstall that the drive will se the mobo drivers etc.

Hey GBL you seem to be getting a bit hung up on problems with this new system.

Don't overcomplicate things looking for solutions and go back to basics :

    1) Do you have another drive (dvd or cd) you can hang on the system ? If so remove the troublesome one and try the other (or even buy one - they're cheap enough)

    2) If you don't have one and can't wait - borrow one from someone - hang theirs on your system and ask them to put yours on their system

    3) if the drives check ok then you know it's a driver and/or motherboard controller issue

    4) It is possible the drive has just failed - it does happen and can appear to be instantaneous !

I will try that but if its reading audio cds then it must be ok on the mobo and controller side, it must be a dodgy setting or something

    not necessarily

Did you read my earlier post about installing Nero (or whatever came with it) as that may "enable" the dvd side of things - sounds daft I know but I have experienced it.

Also, in terms of reading dvd/cd's - the head will read in a different way plus can be sensitive to the particuar dye used on dvd's.

I tried swapping the cables, uninstalled and reinstalled nero etc but still only cds and audio cds.

Tried that but I didn't have any lower filter to delete :blink

Installed Nero after uninstalled it, still reading audio and normall cds.

Yeah... just try a new/different DVD/CD drive for comparison. At least then you know whether its down to the drive exclusively.

If it is then buy a new one, they're only like a tenner. It's it's not then let us know.

Can't you borrow a drive from work?

THe drive doesn't work in another system, I am onto the people i got it from last week so hopefully they'll send me a new one for free. I went onto the samsung web site and downloaded some firmware for it but that didn't do anything. I have also found a few mentions of this drive on the net with people having the same issue.

So it looks like it a dodgy drive

When I return the drive to them, should I include the disk and manual that came with it?

Ask them and see. Depends on their terms with their supplier. Sometimes they want everything back that was supplied and other times it's just the faulty unit. Only way to be sure is to ask them.

they are picking it up in the morning, on their website it's says customer returning 22x Samsung DVD RE-WRITER with Nero Black. Not sure if thats just the product description or it means include the disc, I'll probably return it just to be sure.
