How many years IT experiance do you have mate?

Not good that they pulled the pay rise but as said the company might be in "survival" mode just now.

Hehe, one of my good friends was a VMWare specialist he was on a basic of £48K, plus car allowance, bonus and pension.

He was self taught on all VMWare stuff and had only being using it for a couple of years. Think he got his VCP (not sure if that is right), but has been in IT for about 10 years.

He left the job last year and is now doing Pre Sales Storage and is on a basic of £60K, plus car allowance, bonus and pension.

Both jobs based in the Midlands, can only go by what the IT people around me are earning :D

Pre sales consultancy can get you the big bucks. 8)

No mention of the OP having experience in doing this though.

On taxable income after allowances have been taken off... yes.

Also remember that you'll also be paying NIC.

And also remember that not only main employment earnings are taxable. Company car is a benefit, fuel may be a benefit, there may be other benefits too to add to your pay. Also, pay from second job (barperson in the evening as example), self employment (fixing and building PCs and charging for the job as an example), bank interest (can take you into the 40% band), certain benefits, other pensions, and so on needed to be added to the mix.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread but you have to bear those things in mind as well wehn talking tax.

Thats why I said £35ish, as my buddy was earning £48K plus all the rest of it as a VMWare person. He had only been doing VMware for a couple of years.

But the thing is there are lots of people in lots of jobs who actually have 1 years experience x 10 rather than 10 years experience.

Someone like yourself and what you have achieved, you have 10 years experience. So it depends on the OP and what they do.

Just an FYI I actually helped my friend with the Pre Sales stuff, as he had tons of IT skills but no Sales skills.

Where as I have tons of Sales skills and a small amount of IT skills lol.

Thanks for the clarification Craig:), but wouldn't call sales a skill more rather a good persuasive and confident communicator:)

Gotta disagree again Onoski, sales is most definatley a skill. When you take into account things Neuro Linguistic Programming, questioning techniques e.g. open, closed etc. and the years required to be a good listening.

Sales is about getting people to identify what they really need (not what they think they want), not about being persuasive e.g. someone comes into see you to make an Investment, but what they really need is Life Insurance to protect them and there family for the future.

IT is straight forward, you tell a computer to do 'a' and pretty much it does 'a' as it is logical.

Oh and back to topic :D

    I disagree to. :biggrin

IT sales\consultancy is definitely a skill. I know some IT peeps that are great technically but just cannot communicate their ideas to customers, it can be something simple like “Why do I need a new firewall?” which results in loads of tech talk that the customer cant understand.

To the OP VMWare is a skill that has a rising demand for it. Have a discreet sniff around and see what you can get - of course this is all down to your demonstrable experience with VMWare but if you have good experience etc. then £35k is not unreasonable. Of course in ordinary circumstances the company going back on their salary promise is a big kick in the teeth but these aren't ordinary times so I would try and find out why they have now declined the payrise and figure out your next move from there - they may have a valid reason (not doing too well etc.).
