    Hi Simon,

    How successful self study is depends on the individual.

    It depends on your:
    • Experience with IT
    • Study materials
    • Your knowledge on the subject areas pre-studying
    • The equipment you can get hold of
    • Money
    • Spare Time
    • Willingness to stick at it
    * This list isn't exhaustive

    Some people find self study very hard others find it relatively easy.

    So I nor anyone else can give you a pre-determined time as to when would be achievable for a certain certification - sorry :(

    What I will advise is to go for the something like the A+, N+ or MCDST to start with, these entry level certs will hopefully help you achieve your goal in getting a 1st line position.

    Good luck with the change in career. :D
