So I gave my self a project to implement the Microsoft Central Configuration Manager 2007 at work... I spent the whole morning getting it up and running. I had to setup the prerequisites, then I had issues installing the sms provider service, etc... needless to say long morning... I got it done right after I came back from lunch, I needed a well deserved break!

Tomorrow I will start working on getting the images setup and published on the server, then configure application deployment and so on... I kind want to consolidate a few apps we use such as Symantec ghost, etc...

So far I am very impressed with it! It's a pretty detailed and complicated app but I like challenging things, makes a great day!

I think I am going to spend a good 2-3 days setting it up then start working on the offsite backup stuff...

As Craigie puts it, "Happy days"

Nice job man! SCCM is really powerful, but it sure does offer its own share of headaches at times. Way to get that going though!

Thanks ;) I already ran into an issue, perhaps I am missing something....

So the issue I am having is creating a new distribution point after creating an Operating System Install Package with Windows 7... when right click on distribution points and select New Distribution points and select next, I am prompted with selecting a new distribution point but there's nothing in the list.

    Any ideas guys?

    Right now it's SCCM 2007 SP2 running on windows server 2008 sp2.

The DP won't actually be created until you tell it to, if you create a new package and then right click it, choose Manage Distribution Points and then click on Copy the Package to a new DP that will create the DP on the drive with the largest amount of free space on it.

To ensure that you don't create DP shares on essential drives (like the OS or SQL Log\DB drives) make sure you create a 0 byte file called nosmsondrive.sms and place it on the root of all drives where you don't want the DP to use.

As far as creating your first package is concerned simply use the pre-defined one for the SCCM client, the path for the files should be c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Configuration Manager\Client, once the package is created and you have carried out the instructions above you will have your DP share created.

You should also check and make sure that the site role has been ticked as well, click on Site Management, Site Settings, Site Systems and make sure you have ConfigMgr distribution point there, if not simply right click, New Roles and go through the wizard.

    Very informative Simon thanks....

I created a package called Configuration Manager Client installation located in the Software Distribution pane... when I right click and select Manage Distribution Points, select Copy the package to new DP points and click next, I get nothing in the list to pick and if I click next again... I get there are no DP listed....

Then have you confirmed that you have the DP role enabled?

And have you had a look at this?

Under the site systems where I have my share specified, in the ConfigMgr DP role, the "Enable as a standard DP" is ticked off.

My guess would be that the account you're logged in with doesn't have full access to the site and instances.

Can you double check that for me?

I checked over the permission and all looks good... could it be perhaps drive space? I only have around 5gb left... also I didn't run the AD Schema etextention. Anyways I am going to re-do the whole setup, but I'll do it at home because since this is only a test I don't really want to mess around with production AD unless I am going live with this app... I'll post some more on the weekend.

Ok, follow the instructions from my thread, please let me know if you're going to be doing it on a 2008 R2 server because there are some issues with Webdav not picking up stated settings correctly (they report ok in the IIS Manager console but they don't in the schema file).

I have a 2k3 domain environment at home with a win2k8 member server which I'll be using as the SCCM 2007 and SQL server... I will post once I have it setup and configured.

Thanks for all the help Simon.

Is it 2008 or 2008 R2? I would also suggest doing the AD Schema extensions upgrade as well (as well as the ADSI Edit work).
