After getting the 70-285 and Messaging cert in February I have been going flat out for the 2003 upgrade exams.

Basically running two or three hours at work for study, when I can plus three or fours in the evening when the family is asleep. Of course there is work itself and the family also...so life is real busy!

For preparation I went through the Exam set manuals from Sybex [second edition] for the 2003 Server exams -especially 70-290 and 70-291. Then reviewed the MOC I had done much earlier, and did most over the test labs over a several weeks.

I have booked my 70-292 exam for the 8th May...that's the earliest I can get into my fav test centre.

I have gone completely through my second full review stage and will start to review again at the end of the week.

I find that if I dont look at it for a few days - whatever I forget I concentrate on.

Two weeks ago I was getting 76% for the SelfTestSoftware preps for this exam. [these are brilliant]

So basically I went away for a week, did a few labs again and reviewed the new features of the Server 2003 O/S yet again...plus remote access, DNS, Group Policy...

I gave the preps a break for a week and did that second full review..I did a couple of preps today [50 questions each] and I got 88% both times.

I'll probably give the preps a break again soon and for my last minute review go through the MOC again and look at MOF white papers.

I'll post more as I get closer and when I take the exam...

Of the 2 upgrade exams the 70-292 is the easier (IMO), keep up the studying and let us know how you get on :)

    Good luck

Thanks for the words of support folks!

    Progressing further....

I re-read the 70-291 manual and the MOC for the two upgrade exams, concentrating on DNS, AD and groups.

Also I read a MS DNS whitepaper - admittedly for Windows 2000 - but still useful:

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...n/w2kdns2.mspx

I am going okay and I should do this....but talk about brain fry.

For the scenario type stuff I know I will face in the exams - I think the milestones I know about IP, then DNS, then AD should hold me in good stead.

The subject is definitely 10% to 15% harder than any of the 2000 series core exams.

We are installing three Cisco routers - supply of which was much delayed - this week but I will not configure them up until the first week of May at the earliest - due to this exam committment and to other work committments.

I'll post later as I get time...as I am hitting the books again.

    Update 3rd May:

Well I have been working a little more than a standard week over the last few weeks as I study for 70-292.

Unfortunately this means that my regular work is starting to pile up to about a three weeks behind on non-critical stuff.

I had a good weekend and now a good week reviewing key aspects of this exam.

I am running at 96% in the twice weekly selftestsoftware prep tests as I am seeking still to learn not memorise the test questions.

The emphasis now is on testing my recall of key points and getting enough sleep....easier said than done!

The new features of windows 2003 relating to TS, RDP, ASR etc continue to get looked into further.

I think that understanding the important choices that need to be made during specific scenarios is critical for success - like so many of the exams these days.

The exam is on the 8th May in the morning...I should be okay.

    l8tr!

Ouch well I did not pass - I got 645 - so I missed by about 5% or roughly two questions ....the exam was a complete brute of a thing after the first ten questions.

Still - at least I know where I have to go with my studies now ..I'll give it a couple of weeks and go back for a rematch!

    ...later in the week....

I spent last night and this morning reconciling the exam objectives against what I experienced in the exams.

So now I am working on the two areas identified in the exam report, which are disaster recovery and name resolution.

However I have to find additional specialised resources to deal with this....as the MOC, the reference guides and the prep exam did not go to this level I reckon.

    ....much later on [today]

The interesting thing is that alot of the 70-292 exam appears to be in the guides for 70-293, especially the stuff I went wrong on...

I wish I knew this earlier, as I have always understoof 70-292 to be a combination of 70-290 and 70-291 exams...

I'll also look for the O'Reilly DNS guide the next time I am in town.

I was pullin' for ya, Supa. I'm subconsciously dodging this thing, even though I've got to step up. Were the objectives not specific enough?

You'll get it next time. I'm opting for the insurance when I finally sit.:dry

Thanks folks I am hoping to nail it soon. :D

Fortch: you dont want to wait too long buddy, I reckon two two three months per upgrade exam - and they expire in March next year.

I am motoring on this at the moment coz baby #4 truns up inthe third week in of August..and things could get insane for a few months or so....
