    er OK.

    what then replaces the MCDST?

I had hoped to do this cert after N+.

Is that idea a non-runner now?

    errmmm we know

The MCDST is still a very worthwhile cert to get and there is still time to study and complete it, knock the N+ out before the end of the year to avoid the 3 year renewal and then you've got 3 months minimum to get the MCDST done before retirement!

Details on what 'replaces' the MCDST are available here

    cheers Josiah,

looked at the MCITP but I think windows 7 might be a jump too far just yet.
Besides,I would be keen to show my proficiency on XP.

I know its all relative to the individual, but is MCDST "do-able" in 3 months?

Craigie did it in 1 so yeah, 3 months is do-able.

Its all about how mnuch study time you can put in and how good your skills already are! When are you looking to sit the N+? Obviously the sooner you get that finished the more time you'll have for the MCDST!

I was doing around 10 hours a week for A+

Working 6 days a week and having a young son limits my time (yea I know, sounds like excuses!) .

I hope to have N+ out of the way before end of December, starting the revision next week.

I suppose, realistically, if I knock my pan out there is no reason why I cant have MCDST done by March

Nothing like a bit of fire under the old rear end.

I had planned on taking N+ and then the MCDST. While the subject matter of both the A+ and N+ are nearly the same as the MS cert i would figure that the MS cert goes into far more detail. I looked at the objectives and it does go into more detail. I would feel more confidant going into the MS cert having both comptias under my belt though.

I found the Network+ was useful to have when I studied for the 70-271.
I also found that I was studying faster, probably because I'd figured out which ways of study worked for me while doing the A+. I took over 3 months to do the A+, but only 6 weeks each for the Network+ and the 70-271.

This was mentioned by Boson Michael a few weeks ago.

Veloce I reckon if you knuckle down you should be able to get the N+ and MCDST done PLus after March you could do the MCTS or MCITP windows 7.

Everyones different, its taking me forever to nail the MCDST because life events have completely screwed with my available study time but finding out the exams are being retired is a hell of a useful motivation and I've now got exams booked and I'm on task again!

    I agree Josiah.

The end of August and end of year lifetime cert deadlines for A+ and N+ were a big motivation for me.

cheers for sound advice (as usual) GBL
