I am having some trouble with remote desktop software I have tried logmein and teamviewer they both allow me to remote control my machine at home fine but the problem is when I launch my virtual machine on my home PC trying to control it via logmein or teamviewer it does not work as it gets in a muddle with the mouse cursor,

Does anyone know a good program that will allow me to control my home pc and virtaul machines without any issues it does not have to be one of the free ones.

there's a few things you'll need to set up. some to make it work, others to make it more secure.

Google around there's loads of guides, if you get stuck post back and we can help out.

is it not possible to put logmein or teamviewer onto the VM too? That way you can connect to your home machine, fire up the vm, then disconnect and reconnect directly to the VM?

^^ What he said. Or, create RDP links to all your machines (Physical or Virtual) and access them through one simple interface (I recommend Royal TS).

nb. If using RDP, you'll most likely need to set up custom Port Forwarding rules so you can access all machines on your network via the single IP I'd imagine your router has...

Why don't you just install Logmein on the VM? I've got a couple of VMs that have logmein installed on them as well as my main desktop - that way if, for some reason, my main machine is down, I can still connect to an admin machine on my LAN.

The only thing that doesn't protect me from, of course, is idiot utility companies digging up the road outside my house and severing the poxy cable...

EDIT - Oops - too slow! See above post

I have done this too, apart from getting the cable severed :D

Set up RDP and use a program called RD Tabs to manage them all. If you don't have a fixed IP from your provider you can set up a dyndns account.

Oh god I can't stand VNC
it has got to be the most hideous remote screen protocol in existence..

I will concur with the 'install logmein' in the VM itself
should not be a problem :)

I use visionApp Remote Desktop 2010 for managing hundreds of RDP sessions and credential sets, can also do SSH, Telnet, Citrix etc, tres cool

I also use visionApp but an old free version as now you have to pay for it!

I am going to go with the logmein way but first I need to get Internet working on the virtual machines :(

I use RoyalTS - it dumps all over VisionApp and is still free.

That does look pretty slick mate, i'll check it out for home use ;)

can it handle multiple environments via settings files?
in the new visionapp (i paid for it) i can switch between any environment i have setup (one per client) so that when im on site i fire up the 'client x environment' and have all their sessions and credentials logged

guess thats a specific feature not really needed outside of consulting though ;)

Never done it, but you can load session files as you need them, so I think it should work.

I used RoyalTS a long time ago and it was a Royal POS. Admittedly it was a long time ago, when they had that horrible hamburger icon so I would hope that it improved.

    Might check it out again.

Not sure how long ago that was - but I've been using it religiously since VisionApp went pay (a couple of years now) and I've never had a problem with it. Also never seen a hamburger icon anywhere near it!
