due to my hours at work it just isn't possibe, some weeks I am working days some weeks at night and it can all change at short notice.

I still think the best idea is to save for a while.

my other half was earning 14k a year a few years back, and was renting a 1 bed flat for 250 a month. And aberdeen is not cheap on housing prices.

it can be done, its basic but it can be done. You just need to look at everything you are spending money on and decide what you can do without. You could cut out internet access for a start, thats going to drop your bills. Add a landline to that (if you have a mobile) thats another saving right there. You can buy value items from the supermarket (16p beans anyone?), change electricity providers to get some savings. Theres a whole ream of things you can cut down on saving with in order to be able to afford to live on 14K.

Bear in mind here that 14K isnt minimum wage by any stretch. Hell, I was on 12k for my first IT job. So 14 is pretty good.

You could always rent a room in some sort of houseshare. I have a couple of friends doing that and its *alot* cheaper then renting your own place. Gives you a chance to get on your feet, and seeing how much living in the new place costs etc..!

    Could I? Yes
    Would I? No

I could practically do anything I set my mind to, but just because I can do anything, doesn't mean that I would. Personal circumstances has a lot to do with any decision I make. Cost of living is another factor you have to consider.

If that's the only way for you to get into IT and personal circumstances allows you to do this, go for it. If not, you may want to think again.

Green do you have to have first and last month rent for a down payment? Will you have to have a deposit for elect, phone, and water? And don't forget to try and have a little bit for car related things, new breaks or belts? Anything that might set you back when first starting over again. If you can have any kind of cushion at would be best. I wish you all the best. Now get back to studying, you never know by the time summer comes you may be heading in a different direction.

Thats exactly my point, if I dont have any money behind me and I am hit with un forseen bills then I am screwed. As I have said I have no money in the bank or savings so its going to be very hard thats why I am going to save for a while whilst studying so I have something behind me if or when relocation happens.

Sounds like you are looking at it very sensibly and that's a good thing to do.

One other way of looking at it would be like this. Work out the pay cut, and then think, would I pay that much per year to gain experience in the industry ... Maybe something will come up that is closer to home and you won't have the dilemma next time. :)

Well I believe the pay cut I will probably end up taking is about 4.8k if I was to start on a 14k salary but I would be will to do that if I had something behind me so I knew bills could be paid and so I would know that I would have the next months rent.

To be honest I have waited a long time to get into IT waiting a little longer probably wont do me any harm.

Not sure if this will be any help to you or others, but this is a pretty decent salary comparison calculator - worth using IMO Linky

Admittedly, this is from a contractors site, but does contain quite a few other calculators that we permies can use also - other calculators found at Linky

Well... the only problem is actually setting my mind to do it. I have to *really* want something in order to be THAT determined to do it, ya know what I mean? :)

Plus, sometimes it's a matter of "What do I want MORE?" I could probably set my mind to becoming a millionaire... but I'd have to work 24/7 to make it happen... potentially harming my health, and DEFINITELY harming my relationship with my wife and kids. What do I want MORE?

    Well... Let's just say I'm not a millionaire. ;)
