Just wondering if RAM is backwards compatible? I want to get more memory for my ws to run vmware. At the moment I have a 256MB stick of 184pin, DDR, PC2100, CL2.5, 2.5v, 266MHz RAM but I can't find any 1GB sticks of PC2100. I have found a 1GB 184pin, DDR, PC3200, CL3, 2.5v, 400MHz RAM for a very good price. Can I use this and will it just use a lower speed?

Yes Nugg there is a chance the speed will decrease cos it aint the same as the 256MB stick. I would suggest completely removing the 256MB and use the 1GB on its own which website did you look on? Have you tried www.ebuyer.co.uk cos I am sure they do 1GB sticks in PC2100 DDR266MHz. but if you feel you dont wanna lose the 256MB totally the speed may go down with the 1GB. HTH.

I have checked on Ebuyer Nugg and they have a 1GB stick of PC2100 266DDR RAM for £69.99 (£82.24 inc VAT). not sure if thats the price range you're looking for but I would say thats a bargain cos they are normally about £90-£150 arent they?

Thanks Waliu. Its a great price but with the S&H costs not to mention the customs duties on this end it works out to around the same price as this.

Plus I would have to wait for maybe a week to get it.

I think some of it is backward compatible probably depends on a number of things such as motherboard etc.

I brought some PC3200 and it seemed then found out after that my mb only supported PC2800 seems to work okay though.

Thanks for the help. I've just found a gig stick of the same type for around 60 Sfr more. Think I'll get it. Thanks all.
