You say that with a certain amount of humor but that is often the problem with a "troublesome" device. The user simply didn't realize that there was no power to the unit.

I'm surprised that it took 10 posts before anyone even mentioned the cable ! I certainly wouldn't carry a spare monitor to a first-time visit, and in the context of the question (and bearing in mind comptia's styl-ee), of the options available, I would first say:

    [HIDE]A[/HIDE]
    Then, [HIDE]B, D and NOT C[/HIDE]

its to hide your answers. use the [hide ] [/hide ] tags (w/o spaces). once you post in the thread, the hidden parts become visible.

I would first check the leads before anything else but since that aint on the list I would do B first.

Another good example of comptia vagueness as I mentioned earlier. A lot of the time,. you really do have to "best guess" the answer. Of course the first thing to check would be leads. And (sorry I forget who raised the point) booting to Safe Mode is fine in Windows, but no OS is stated. The twist in this question is that the user wants you to come out and visit her. Who would really be carrying a spare monitor ?

Swapping the gfx card is a highly realistic choice here, as if there wasn't a quick fix, you'd certainly look at this at some point. However, bear in mind that the general consensus is that you start with the most least-invasive troubleshooting, then gradually become more in-depth - ie, you would definitely (IMHO) try a different monitor before opening the case and swapping cards (if that is even an option - maybe onboard gfx and no spare slots, for example)

As mentioned in a previous question - one should NEVER attempt to work on the inside of a monitor unless specifically trained in that particular branch of electronics.

My thoughts on this question - 2€, and feel free to disagree :)

firstly i'd strap an anti static wrist band to the customer,
then plug both them and the monitor into the mains,
then give him a large metal handled screw driver and
tell him to poke about inside a bit until the screen lights up.

then stand well back while drinking larger...... oh i'd also record
the results on my mobile and post it on here.

i'd go for "b" myself,,,,, no i'd do the above really...

Okay I've just read through the posts here and have a couple of points to raise.

First, read the question. As we all know a lot of the questions on the exams (especially MS) rarely reflect the real world. Comptia come close though. That's still no excuse to read into the question what YOU would do first. There was no mention of checking any cables, of turning the monitor on etc.

Second, for those who chose A as the first thing to do, could you please explain to me how you boot into safe mode when the monitor isn't working?

That's wierd I'd have gone for A but thanks for the heads up on Comptia vagueness.

So if I get a job as a PC Tech I'll be sure to carry a spare monitor as part of my tool kit :blink

aye, i don't think the "carrying the monitor around" comes into the equation here folks :tongue

Seriously, the part could have been a floppy or something just as simple. As Gav pointed out they are normally looking out for the "best" answer :blink

Actually quite a few people have more than one computer in their houses these days. The kids quite often get the parents cast offs.
