Whilst looking for some information on services that I had running on my laptop I came across the following site that contains information about processes and where they are from, weather they can be disabled, etc.

    http://www.processlibrary.com

May be useful if you are having problems with your PC's running slow, or for freeing up that extra bit of memory.

I'm glad you mentioned sysinternals - they do a lot of very cool advanced diagnostic apps like those!

VNC or one of it's flavours (we use UltraVNC) - incredibly useful program for remote work.
Sometimes I use it on PC I can see from my desk through pure laziness

A useful tool that I use is a windows live cd called pebuilder.exe

Contains network support which is very useful when you need to retrieve files from a unstable windows install.

Creates an iso file from your own windows cd

Programs that always get installed after a format.
I won't post links as my current connection is costing £2.35 p/mb and I'll have to go to each site to get a link costing me a few quid. A quick Google search will point you in the right direction.

Avast! - Free Antivirus also detects some spyware. Low use of resources.

Kerio Firewall - Free firewall, installed in basic mode so no questions. Web filtering (adverts) is disabled after 30 days but I don't use it anyway. Again is low in resource use.

Windows Defender (Beta 2) - Free Real time spyware protection, fairly new but I'm impressed so far. Although I do sometimes run ad-aware along side to check its still working. Very quiet program.

Gimp - Free image editing comparable to Photoshop. (from Linux originally I think) Requires the GTK runtime which is available from the download page.

Open Office - Free office software, very nice if you can't justify £130 for a basic version of Microsoft Office.

Laptop connected to my mobile via usb and using GPRS connection. Charged at Vodafones rate of £2.35 p/mb for data transfers. Unfortunatly its the only connection I have at present. Haven't had time to get broadband and wireless sorted since moving in.

    Hi all,

Think the other idiot has been on ebay as well.

    Irfanview
    DreamWeaver
MS publisher (actually the best web design program I have used but the code is crap)
    PaintShopPro
    Fireworks
    Firefox
    Excel
    Word
    CutePDF

Boring but I have tried openoffice etc.

If the resultant code is crap then the application is no good at creating compliant web pages and hence it can't be the best web design program. IMHO Publisher creates pages that are an un-editable mess :blink

    Wow bluerinse,

    touchy or what.

For the purpose of creating web pages, publisher is easy to use as a beginner, that is what I was referring to. Not the source file coding, accessiblity, validation etc

Hang loose, relax a bit, its my list not yours

I couldnt live without the fantastic popup blocker "AdMuncher" its fantastic.

Also "Virtual CloneDrive" similar to Daemon Tools virtual CD software.

Also a program which has been EXTREMELY handy is "logmein" which is remote software which needs no ports opened at all.

I could never access my home pc from work UNTIL i installed LogMeIn.

Snagit is a must as well for screenshot capturing.

    Its brilliant.

Musnt forget the PE discs and Live Linux CDs :)

Also just like to add the SiSoft Sandra 2007 Benchmarking Suite is a valuable tool, especially for seeing how slow your CPU is compared to the new Intel Duo CPUS ;)

    Fantastic thread!

Programs I can't live without (broken them down into work and play)

    WORK

MS Office (tried OpenOffice and didn't like it, Office 2K3 rules)
Visio (nothing beats it for quick & dirty network diagrams)
    Dreamweaver
    Paint Shop Pro
    SnagIt
WallWatcher & FireGen (for monitoring my firewall logs)
Cain & Abel (network probing toolkit)
SysInternals (ProcMon, FileMon, TCPView, AutoRuns and all the rest - an absolute godsend when sorting out spyware)
    McAfee VirusScan
    DameWare (for remote control)
Auditor (Live bootable Linux distro for pen-testing - recently replaced by BackTrackLive)
    Nero
    SmartFTP

    PLAY

Windows Media Player 11 (sorry, M$ beats everyone hands down here)
Audioscrobbler plugin (so that I can upload my music tastes for everyone to see :) )
Tag & Rename (best audio file tagging tool I've ever used)
Soulseek (the best P2P program around - no problem finding the most obscure old music on there that you can't get on CD for love nor money)
    Firefox (natch)
    FreeRip
PowerTab (I'm a guitar player - this is probably the greatest invention ever for guitarists)

    Certifications: A few
    WIP: None - f*** 'em
