So does VMWare set the environment ie Hardware required to run that OS, but you still need to load the OS??

I mean does VMWare come with the OS installed or do I have reload it in the VM environment??

VMware emulates hardware so you need to install the OS. You need to create a virtual machine by clicking File -> New -> Virtual Machine then click Next

    Choose Typical then Next

Then choose Microsoft Windows and in the selection box below choose Win95 then next and next again. In the network connections choose NAT then click next. In the disk capacity options leave the default of 8GB then tick the box below to allocate space now then click finish. VMWare will then create your machine.

Win 9X will install with far less space - unless you plan on using all that!

Incidently - while NT4 is superficialy like Win95, many items are *very* different. For example, IIRC, NT4 didn't have *any* Plug'n'Play stuff.

If the point of this excercise is to play with NT4 then that is what you need to have.

Also IIRC, for the early versions of NT4 you had to partition your drive such that the boot partition was under 2GB. (NT4 didn't understand FAT32).

So I will try less memory and goto 512mb, but I am still going to give the VMware a go! From what I have read here on CF and on the VMWare website it sounds excellent and just what i need.:biggrin

Does this mean you had to set up the devices through IRQ's?

    So WIN NT 4.0 doesn't support P & P?:blink

On original NT4, devices were either set with IRQ links on the board (this was pre-PCI days remember), or by the device drivers in question, or by both.

We often don't realize just how much PnP has done for us! I used to keep a special set of pages for my machine that detailed the settings for IRQs and DMAs, and config file settings. I had a complex machine for those days, and this was the *only* way I could keep it running when items were changed.

Si, do they do a student version of VMW?

    $189 seems a bit steep:(

Just had a quick look at the release notes, can't see the catch but there must be one?? Nothing worth while in life is free espically if it's made by Microsoft:biggrin :p

Is there a 30 day limited on the beta version??
