    Hi thanks for the replies.
I didnt like the sound of the cleanspl.exe and i have no idea about vm,s at the mo so i have gone with the link posted by Raffaz (thanx)

Step 1 First, click Start, then right click Computer and select Manage, then click Device Manager, and then click View and then click Show Hidden Devices.

Step 2 Select System Devices and then uninstall both the UMBus Enumerator as well as the UMBus Root Bus Enumerator.

Step 3 Reboot and then click Start, then Control Panel and select Add Hardware.

Step 4 Now select Install the Hardware Manually and click on "Show All Devices" to add the UMBus Enumerator and the UMBus Root Bus Enumerator.

Step 5 Reboot and then install your printer.

I have got to step 4 and clicked show all devices but i cant find the UMBus Enumerator etc to install them?

    EDIT...
Ok i found them and installed them but unfortunately its made no difference to the error!

have you tried "printmanagment.msc" from the start menu? I had agro on-site somewhere last week and discovered this. I believe the person had done exactly what has happened to you; the printer was plugged in before the vendors software. Use this to remove everything relating to the printer in question. Re-boot (with the device un-plugged), install the manaufacturers software and then plug it in.

    fingers crossed!

Does it matter that this is for a scanner not printer?
What i dont understand is, if there was a problem with the spooler then in my understanding the printer wouldnt work.
I have never had a problem with my printer and this error only came about after problems installing a scanner (which is installed and working now) so what exactly does the spooler do?

Spooler is a place on the hard drive where the "print job" (your document) is put so the program can continue other functions. The spooler will then send the document to the printer you selected, through the driver you installed.

So if the spooler isnt working surely the printer wouldnt be able to print the document?

Well the spooler is like a buffer, so if your printer memory runs out, the documents are queued up in the spooler. This is so that you can continue working on other things, rather than facing the document printing window.

My guess is that you can still print even though the spooler service is stopped, because you haven't yet tried to print a large enough print job that exceeds the printer memory.

In a nutshell you are printing directly to the printer device.

Warnings (yellow) or errors (red) in the system or application log.

If there are any it might give another clue as to what the issue is.

Another option could be a repair install of the operating system here. Do you have a copy of Vista to hand?
