On a Windows 2003 SP2 machine we open perfmon.exe and try to setup some counters for monitoring. But instead of getting the usual Counter names (Processor; Memory; TCP threads, disk utilization, etc) all that we get is a list of random numbers.
We click: Performance Logs & Alerts; Counter Logs; New Log Settings; Name; Add Counters; Use Local Computer Counters; Performance Object.

It is this "Performance Object" drop-down box that lists the random numbers instead of the usual counter names. We haven't seen this on any other server.

    Thanks:)

Missed this first time round. Looks as if the performance counters are screwed - check this article from Technet out on how to reregister/rebuild them. That should sort it - for some reason performance counters always seem to have been susceptible to this (in my experience anyway)
