    Hi all,

got a PC coming back again tonight, seem to fix this all the time. Whenever the younger brother goes on it it becomes completely infected with trojans spyware etc, ends up restarting etc. When it leaves me its like new, reformatted blah blah. The older brother says they put a password on it to keep him off, but he seems to get round it. God knows where hes going/downloading!!. Theyve asked me for a better solution, maybe BIOS password? lockdown? Im thinking of different things, all thoughts appreciated.

Best way is to get a couple of removable drive trays. and buy a second drive.

While you use the machine you use *your* drive, and when finished lock it away and put the other drive in. Doesn't matter what he does to it then. And refuse to clean it! :p

Hm - I may have misread this - these aren't *your* brothers? If they aren't then increase your charges for fixing it.

see if you can identify the sites he's going on and block them, or get some form of "Net Nanny". Sounds very much like little bro is going on sites he shouldn't. Judging by the infection its hacker sites/porn sites/peer to peer software thats to blame.

In a family situation there is no way to stop this from happening. Even if you put passwords on all that needs to happen is that the current user gets called away and somebody else sits down.

This is a 'people' problem - don't expect to solve such problems with technology.

lol - works for me :D

Failing that, any chance you can some access to the HDD and the temp files or history to see what types of sites are being visited and the content being downloaded. If they be naughty ones then maybe having the brothers together and showing them the sort of stuff that's causing the problem will embarrass them enough to stay off those types of sites.

Net nanny software could be a good idea but if the younger brother knows how to circumvent the password, would he have enough knowledge to circumvent the site filter?

Also, the final point is, is the little bro just the scapegoat here?

Windows Steady State maybe an option,

that way it doesn't matter what he does, the machine will be restored back to the way it was.
