i'd like a way to back up a PC image onto USB key and restoring when required from that image.

is there any software (licenced or open source) that can do this?

    thanks.

Any imaging software that can see the USB key as a drive should be able to image to and from that drive. Obviously, you'll have to ensure that the key is big enough to store the data...

so you can just boot from USB key for example if the existing OS is dead and load the PC image on that way? i never uite understood this imaging business.

thanks for the acronis recommendation. i'll give the demo a try.

Depends completely on the imaging program. Some will merely let you store images on USB. Others may let you boot directly from USB, while others may require a bootable CD/DVD.
