Steer clear of norton, go for something like:

    www.zonealarm.com
    www.comodo.com for firewalls.

    For anti-virus:

    http://free.firesoft.com

You can already block spam through a firewall. But to get rid of spyware like cookies from tracking a sites you could use:

    http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

You are likely looking at several solutions to be honest. With Freeware its highly unlikely to find a (good) single solution.

For AV I and most people here will recommend AVG.
Firewall most people would tend to recommend ZoneAlarm, Although I personally dont rate it too highly.
Spam, I have no idea im afraid. Sure someone else will have a suggestion though.

We set a mate of mine up with Avast a few years back. Apart from the (as I recall) dodgy sound effects on occassion, I think he found that it was fairly reliable. Personally I've never used it, and I've found AVG to be fine, but hes certainly never complained about Avast.

I use comodo as my firewall

Anti vir as my virus software

Spybot search & Destroy and Adaware as spyware removers.

All of them are free :D
